Asus Eee PC 901 First Impressions

New Software and Games for the Eee PC 901

In an effort to continue improving the features of the Eee PC Asus has upgraded the WiFi support on offer in the Eee PC 901 though - now giving the laptop full 802.11n WiFi capabilities.

Another major change for the new Eee PC 901 is that the battery has been upgraded too. The new version is a 6-cell Li-ion battery running at 6600mAh, though the bad news is that the total weight of the Eee PC has now been increased by 100 grams - but it isn't like that is going to break your back, is it?

Software-wise, the Eee PC 901 has had an almost total revamp too - there's new games (including the air-hockey clone TuxPuck, which shamefully whupped our asses in front of new bit-tech staff member Harry), new shortcuts and new utilities too, though we didn't get a chance to try all of these out in our brief hands on. It was literally all about the TuxPuck, sorry!

Interestingly though, shortcuts on the desktop did point to new software such as a DVD player, which strikes us as odd since the Eee PC doesn't have an optical drive at all!


Asus were also nice enough to confirm with us that all Asus Eee PC 901 users will get a leaflet with their new laptop that will give them access to an online data storage bank called YOStore! and which will give each user an additional 20GB of space online, which will be great for backing up your data if you have to enable to recovery partition and restore the factory settings.

The Asus Eee PC 901 is set to retail for a stunning £319 in the UK - which is mindblowing when you consider the new WiFi support and the fact that the Linux model (which is vastly superior in our opinion) still has 20GB of space on the SSD when you get it. Throw in the online data storage which effectively doubles that figure and you're looking at one tasty treat!


In all honesty, the Eee PC looked as if it was starting to forget what it was all about recently what with the announcement of a desktop Eee PC and some rather bizarre accessories. Thankfully though, Asus seems to have had a return to form - the new Eee PC 901 looks to be the best and most tempting sub-notebook on the market. It's just a little bit weird that the first Eee-killer to really hit the market looks to be just the next Eee PC!
